Happy Humpday

Now that my Wednesday and midweek workday is about done, it is time to celebrate Happy Humpday. I am starting out with a camel but it might be anything with a hump. For those real good at figures it could be something like the Humpback of Notre Dame...or any hill with hump in its name. It might even be something that is visually descriptive of something being half done.

Cactus Monday

Happy Cactus Monday. Prismacolor pencils and Micron pen. Here is a pair of grafted cactus. Tried this a few times many years ago. The idea is to cut the top off the base cactus and then graft on a different variety of cactus on the wound. I don't know if anyone does much of this anymore.

Sitting here this morning listening to my favorite channel (60s Rock) on my Comcast Rhapsody player I come to realize that time does fly. Prismacolor pencils and Pitt pen.

Cape Blanco Lighthouse

I didn't much feel like doing anything today in my sketchbook, but as the evening wound down I decided to do a quick sketch of one of my favorite subjects...a lighthouse. This one is a representation of the Cape Blanco Lighthouse in Curry County, Oregon. It is the southernmost light in the state of Oregon. Done with Micron pen o1. Hope to come back in the near future with a colorized version, but to get some sketching done for today here is my black ink version.

Neocolor II's

Here is my collection of Neocolor II's. I only used a small portion of them on my experimental piece with the blue door garage. I will have to do something else since some of them did not get used. I heard rumblings from those that sat in the box during the whole process.

Playing with Neocolor II watersoluable crayons

Today's project was to play with the Neocolor II watersoluable crayons that I picked up cheap a week or so ago. Not knowing what I am doing I just jumped in and tried a variety of ways of using these crayons. I did an initial sketch with my Micron 02 pen to lay out the garage and fence as well as where the tree branches were going to fall. The primary method was to apply dry in a fairly light application and then followed up with a wet brush. I also applied the crayon dry to wet paper. Also in this piece I dipped the crayon directly into water and then applied to the paper and followed up with a very lightly wet brush. also used was taking a wet brush and taking color right off the crayon and then applied to paper. I also unintentionaly had a couple of places where the crayon was applied wet to wet paper and got some results I hadn't intended. The only thing I wish I had done would be to do a light wash first of the upper background. The task was actually fun. There was another garage to the right. I may need to go back into this and put something on the right side of this picture to balance it a little better.

Another figure attempt

Here is another figure attempt for today. Granted she is clothed and not a complete figure. At least one of the eyes and possibly the other is a bit big. Could round out the chin a bit. Bottom line, at least I am giving it a go with drawing faces. I've stepped into it and I guess there is no going back.

Somewhat better soft pastel result

Couldn't find any books at my branch of the library for pastel work. There was a section in McDaniels' The Drawing Book that had a two page spread as another form of drawing on soft pastels and had a sort of demonstration without really telling anything. Took some clues from that to give me sort of the idea. On tinted 80lb Strathmore Pastel paper 11"x14" with my really yucky Reeves soft pastels and a couple Derwint Pastel pencils. For your amusement. The actual is a bit more brighter than this.

How about a Crassula argentea to cap off the evening. Done in ink and Prismacolor color pencils. Do succulents qualify for Cactus Monday?

Ok...I'm not ready for this. Soft pastels....soft chalky pastels. Dust everywhere. I'm posting this for Cactus Monday, but would like some advice on what to do with these things. I didn't mind the oil pastels, but I think these are going on back burner.
