Randomness on my desk

Very quick sketches of randomness on my desk. Ink with some color pencil. The mug handle turned out really wonky....so I am going to have to work on those. I thought it would help looking at it head on...but....well you see. Notice the one little attempt at a portrait of old Abe on the cent coin.

I have never seen a cup warmer, so for me this is educational stuff! I like the randomness of these, but also the inevitability of what one finds on a modern desk ... Do those slip-on erasers actually work for anyone, or is it just my fault that they only seem to smear my mistakes across the page?

I like the layout. You're good at sketch grids! I enjoyed your "Outdoor Life" one too.

I have went thru four coffee warmers in my lifetime. I am now needing one. Great drawings.

I have a famous uncle, now deceased, but I love finding mention of him online.

Drawing the handle facing you is a hard angle! Cheers to you for taking a crack at it in this drawing-it looks great. I like your other desk objects too!

These are really fun sketches. I wish I could do something like that.

I love the grid...and the idea that you decided to look at the mug in a different way. Why do we always draw it from the side?

Hey Alan - thanks for your comments on my blog. If you have pastels (I take it they are soft pastels rather than oil pastels?) stashed away, I say dig them out sometime and play around with them awhile. Although it didn't take long for me to start loving the medium, it DID take quite a bit of experimentation and work to figure out how to make fine lines, not smudge everything, and so on. I would suggest trying a coated pastel paper such as Art Spectrum Colourfix, Wallis (expensive but amazing stuff, usable with any medium and if you don't like what you've painted, you can wash it off and start again!) or another paper with an abrasive texture that enables you to layer colours. Great fun to be had with pastels! At the moment I'm mostly working with oil pastels to avoid the issue of dust.

Alan, just as in your fishing related drawing, I really like this style of sketching from you, it's a fun format and style! I'd like to see you do more like these!
